Occasionally Remote Control is Just NOT COOL

We didn’t anticipate uttering those words one day after launching a blog about our passion for remote control, but there you have it…

Just over a month ago, Charlie Miller presented a preview of a vulnerability that opens every single iPhone in the world to takeover by malicious hackers. According to Forbes’ Andy Greenberg, Charlie and fellow security researcher Collin Mulliner are planning to demonstrate how to send a series of mostly invisible SMS bursts that can give a hacker complete power over all iPhone functions at Black Hat tomorrow.

Apparently weaknesses in the binary code sent via text message could allow hackers to control your iPhone’s telephone dialing, web browsing, GPS, camera, microphone, and text messaging.

So what can you do to protect yourself? It’s simple; if you receive a text message containing only a single square character (□), turn off your phone immediately (press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on the top of your iPhone until the screen says, “slide to power off,” and then slide the slider). We have no idea when it would be safe to turn an infected phone back on, so do yourself a favor and leave it off until Apple technical support tells you the coast is clear.

We’ve seen this kind of thing before, but it’s usually fixed before the situation gets out of hand. The most alarming element of this story is the fact that Apple has been aware of this for more than a month and still hasn’t issued a patch. Why? Nobody’s talking; but in twelve hours or so, everyone will know how to gain remote control of any iPhone.

Well isn’t that just great! I had heard about this the other day. Hopefully they won’t be able to control my RedEye! :)
