Logitech 700: Suffering From Middle Child Syndrome

This morning, Jeff Bakalar over at Crave said of the new Harmony 700 remote, “It looks a lot like the Harmony One or the new Harmony 900 and the freshly announced Logitech Harmony 700 Remote only appears to be missing the touch screen found on its bigger brothers.”

Keeping it in the family appears to be what Logitech does best.

Logitech has wedged in a new product to their extensive three-digit-name army of remotes. The new Logitech 700 features a rechargeable, activity-based universal remote control with a color display screen. This places it somewhere between the curiously similar Harmony 670 with monochrome LCD screen and the Harmony One which features a color touch screen.

Aside from varying wand styles (which admittedly, do look pretty sleek) the $150 Harmony 670 and the $250 Harmony One don’t differ much other than $100 price gap and a color touchscreen instead of a monochrome LCD.

When we covered Logitech’s last snazzy wand, the Harmony 900, we pointed out the slow evolution of their line looks more like rebranding than anything else. The trend continues here. Over the last two years the old guard (the 670, the 880, and the 890) has slowly given way to the new one. The prices are about the same, as are the features. Only the styling seems to be different. I like the styling and ergonomics of the new models — I just wonder why the rollout has taken so long. Are there big improvements on the horizon, or is this what we can expect out of the Harmony division for the next couple of years?
