I have felt at home with a remote in my hand since the day I was born. Anything from a TV to a PS3 to a Wii, I've played with them all (even the bad ones). The problem now is that I have too many of them for all my toys and gadgets... just ask my girlfriend. Now, I am on an epic quest to find the latest and greatest ways to control all my junk.

Walking around today I realized just how much technology I have lining my pockets. There is my PDA, my iPod, RFID cards… I have at least few hundred dollars sitting in there. So I got to thinking: If I have this much technology outside of my pants, why isn’t there any on the inside? Just [...]

I like the Wii just as much as the next guy — but it starts to wear after a while. Jumping around and swinging that remote is fun for some games, but in the end I’m pretty sure its a passing novelty. The people at Canesta seem to agree with the fun part, but also [...]

Dungeon Masters around the world must be celebrating at the possibility of giving their dungeons a touchscreen makeover.  Indeed, it seems that everything is more fun on a touchscreen — or at least the group at the Entertainment Technology Center of Carnegie Mellon must think so. They have made a very expensive update to the [...]

Setting up a universal remote can be a big hassle.  First you have to find the button combination to enter setup mode, and then you have to find the right code to enter — usually printed in small type in a user guide. Somtimes there is an auto-program feature, but these can be hit or [...]

It is probably a safe bet to assume anyone with a car and an iPhone has said, “man, I wish this thing could start my car.”  Maybe you’ve been walking to your car on a frigid night or a scorching day, but you’ve wondered about it, haven’t you? Maybe you remember this early post from [...]

Everyone needs a hug sometimes, right? C’mon, even you macho types can admit it. So when times get tough and you need that hug to get you going again, what if your loved ones are away or a random stranger won’t give you that hug? Friend, if this is you, then Singapore’s Mixed Reality Lab [...]

Ever stop to think about how much technology has infiltrated our lives? We use the Internet constantly — Twitter updates from friends, work from anywhere, fantasy sports scores every minute. All this can happen at once, on a simple cell phone. Even so, it seems that classrooms have lagged behind. What about computers and projectors [...]

There have been a variety of uses for multitouch tables, but, to be honest, most of them aren’t really that interesting.  We have all seen the promos of people having the time of their life pinch-zooming pictures and flicking them around, but it doesn’t look like much fun to me.  That is until I saw [...]

Have you ever thought about what the future of the computer mouse might be? Frankly the mouse hasn’t even changed much over the years, and I have come to take for granted its role as the reliable computer pointing device (and the best for controller for FPS). Of course with all the hype about touch [...]

If you dig a little on the Internet, it’s not too difficult to find prototype devices or interfaces that use your brain as a controller. There are videos left and right from companies and researchers trying to perfect and to capitalize on this novel method of control. The issue is that few companies have actually [...]
